Bergmannkiez: why is it unique?

1. 100% Berlin. In the Bergmannkiez you have a unique chance to experience real Berlin life. So, if you want to avoid tourist crowded places and discover Berlin’s authenticity, this is a place for you!

2. The Bergmannstraße, the highlight of the neighborhood, is perceived as one of the most authentic streets in Berlin. This relaxed place with extraordinary atmosphere symbolizes openness, multiculturalism and alternative lifestyle, that’s why it is so popular with locals. It is lined up with cafés, bars and restaurants, delis, fashion boutiques, bookshops and gift shops. At the end of the street there is a historic market square and a market hall.

3. Real Kiezleben. It is a place where different generations and people with diverse background intersect: young people, families with children, hipsters, artists, residents of all ages…

4. Charming architecture. Most of the buildings in this area were not severely damaged during the Second World War, the architecture thus retained its original character and together with cobbled streets resemble Prague or Paris.

5. Unusual shopping spots. Many small stores with a wide variety of goods are lined up along the promenade. The Bergmannkiez is famous for its stores offering traditional handmade crafts (shoemaker’s, stationer’s, dressmaker’s, gift shops, hat stores…) and for its (secondhand) bookshops with variety of books in many languages, including English, French, Spanish, Italian or Russian.

6. Street cafés and restaurants: Can you imagine a long street where you can taste almost any cuisine you can think of? Greek, Turkish, Mexican, Thai, Italian, Vietnamese, Indian, a good deal of veggie restaurants, burgers… Looking for something exotic you might haven’t tried yet? Then go for Sudanese! Plenty of cozy cafés and deli’s make the Bergmannkiez a favorite place for gourmets and café-lovers.
Tip: The Bergmannstraße is a particularly popular spot for experiencing breakfast or brunch on the weekend!

7. Marheineke-Markthalle.
Also, the market hall Marheineke-Markthalle offers specialties from all over the world. However, here you can also find stalls with fresh organic vegetables, fruits, meat, fish, cheese, wine, pastry and baked goods. In spring and summer, you can sit outside the hall, observe the “Kiezleben” while enjoying a coffee or a dish bought in one of the cafés and restaurants in the hall. From time to time, art exhibitions are held in there too. Plus, nearby (on the Marheinekeplatz) is a traditional flea and eco market which belongs to one of the oldest and biggest ones in Berlin. It takes place every weekend.

8. Once you’re done with shopping, you can marvel at the Evangelical church situated on the Marheinekeplatz.
